Hiram MacDonald

Today I added one headstone photograph to the page of St. Mary’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Shiers Road, Harrigan Cove, Halifax County, NS.

Hiram

MacDonald

Died July 27, 1923

Age 72 years

I could not find Hiram MacDonald’s death record on the Nova Scotia Genealogy website after searching with various spellings and years. Either he died out of the province or his record was indexed incorrectly. According to his headstone, he would have been born about 1851.

According to the 1901 Census, he was born September 26, 1857. However, according to the 1911 Census, he was 59 years old, indicating he was born in 1853 if his birthday was in September.

In 1901, he lived with his father, Archibald McDonald, born November 18, 1817. In my records, I have an Archibald born around the same time who married Mary Ann Englehutt. Searching further, I found the family in the 1891 Census. Hiram was 38 years old (born c1852 if born in September) and lived with his mother, Mary Ann, age 86 (born c1805), and father, Archibald, age 76 (born c1815).

Given that Hiram lived his life in Harrigan Cove, it is highly likely his death record has been indexed incorrectly. There shows no history he left the province, so he probably died here. The census records show no sign of marriage, so he was probably single his entire life.

In the 1911 Census, he was single and living with his nephew, Hiram Jackson, age 23, and niece, Lizzie Jackson, age 29.

Rest in Peace

I don’t have any further information on this couple. Raymond may be the son of Mary Ann Jordan McDonald and Trueman Lester MacDonald. From the symbols on his headstone, it appears he was a member of the Orange Order.

The F L T in the three links of chain represents Friendship, Love and Truth. This symbol is also used on headstones of Independant Order of Odd Fellows and Freemasonry, however, the archway, snake, eye of Providence (covered by flower), ladder and 2 1/2 are exclusive to the Orange Lodge. The symbols supposedly represent the following

  • Snake – Everlasting Life
  • Archway – Passageway to Heaven
  • Five-point Star – Spirit Rising to Heaven
  • Formula 2 1/2 – Two and a Half Tribes

Spencer and Harry MacDonald

Today I added one headstone photograph to the page for St. Mary’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Shiers Road, Harrigan Cove, Halifax County, NS. It is one of four steel crosses in a row.

Spencer

Harry

MacDonald

This could be Spencer Harry MacDonald, but from other steel crosses in the same cemetery, I believe the cross marks the burial for two people: Spencer AND Harry MacDonald. More than likely, they are brothers.

I have not found any records to indicate who Spencer and Harry MacDonald are. The names on the other steel crosses are: Jim, Edward, Charles and Levine MacDonald.

Assuming these individuals are from the same family, we might also assume the couple Levine (also spelt Lavinia in some records) and Charles are the parents of Spencer and Harry.

Found in the 1891 Census is the family with the following children: William, Amelia, Daniel, Mary, Jeremiah Freeman, Annie A., Edmond, James F, Maud Julia, Adam, Freeman and Henry E. The Edmond in this group might be the Edward on the steel cross. The Henry might be Harry, and James could easily be Jim. I have not found any vital or census record with the name Spencer in the area. Hopefully, the name will show up as I continue to add information to this page, and I will be able to properly identify him.

MacDonald

Ervin’s name is spelt with an E in all public records. Only on his headstone did I find it with an I, so for the purpose of this website, I will write it with an E. His mother completed the death record in her handwriting, which is another reason to choose E.

Ervin Freeman MacDonald’s day of birth has multiple possibilities. Personally, the birth record should be the official one, but I’ll leave it up to the individual researcher to decide for themselves. The birth dates and their sources I’ve found are…

The one thing agreed upon is that he was born at Harrigan Cove. He was the son of Maudie Lillas Typert and Jeremiah Freeman MacDonald. He lived his whole life in the village. He did not marry, and I have not found any children he sired.

Ervin died on August 31, 1956 at Harrigan Cove. It appears he was on his way home from work (as it was the last day he had worked) as a labourer when he was struck by a car. He suffered a possible skull fracture and other fatal injuries.

His age at death is also one to ponder. The death record reads 41 years old though the number one could be used as a thin number eight. BUT, if he was 41 years old, then he would have been born in 1915, since he would have celebrated his birthday in 1956. Since he was recorded in the 1911 Census, 41 is incorrect. If he was 48 years old, he would have been born in 1908.

Here’s an image of his death record focussing on his age, so you can decide.

The Family

Russell Jerry MacDonald was probably born in Harrigan Cove. He was the son of Maudie Lillas Typert and Jeremiah Freeman MacDonald. His death record will be released by Nova Scotia Genealogy in July 2017. No online record can be found for him because he was born too late for the 1921 Census and birth records are only available up to 1915.

I only know he was the son of Maudie because of family research. Maudie is one of two sisters of my grandfather, William Clarence Typert.
