Sarah Matilda Moser and Nelson Moser

Today I added a headstone photograph to the page of Early Settlers Cemetery ~ Herr Heinrich Moser Sr., Moser River, Halifax County, NS. There are only three headstones with inscriptions in the cemetery and, with this addition, they have all been added to the Inscription page. The other grave markers are blank crosses.

According to his birth record, Nelson Moser was born June 16, 1868 at Moser River. He was the son of Sophia Hawbolt and Ephraim Moser, who was a ship carpenter. Sophia and Ephraim married in 1865 at Moser River.

According to his marriage record, Nelson and Sarah Matilda Moser wed on July 5, 1894 at Moser River. Nelson was 24 years old and working as a fisherman. Sarah was the tender age of 15. She was born at Moser River, the daughter of Catherine and William Moser.

In the 1901 Census, the family was recorded in Smith Cove. Matilda S. (age 22; born April 4, 1878) and Nelson (age 32) had four children: Anna P. (age 7), Norman V. (age 5), Elizabeth (age 3) and Edith M. (age 1).

Ten years later in the 1911 Census, Sarah (age 32; born 1879) and Nelson (age 43) had five children in the house: Norman (age 15), Bessie (age 13), Viola (age 9 or 4), Sylvester (age 3) and Raymond (age 11 months). Anna P. and Edith M. were missing from the census. Perhaps they passed away. Anna may have married. She would have been 17 years old. Edith would have only been 11 in 1911.

Nelson died on August 3, 1955 at Moosehead, Halifax County, NS, at the age of 89 years. Sarah passed away nine years later on August 28, 1964 at Moosehead. She was 86 years old. According to her death record, she was born April 27, 1878 at Moser River. Her parents were recorded as Catherine McDonald and William Moser.

According to William Edward Moser’s headstone, he was born c1836. I found the marriage record for him and Catherine Moser. They were married on February 5, 1877 at Moser River. William was 40 at the time, which would place his birth year as c1837. He was born at Moser River, the son of Ann and George Moser. He worked as a farmer.

Catherine was 24 years old at the time of marriage. She was born in c1853 at Moser River, the daughter of Mary Ann and Archibald Moser.

Found in the 1881 Census at Necum Teuch, William (age 44) and Catherine (30) were living with their children Eliza Ann (age 9), Esintha (age 5), George William (age 3) and Sarah Matilda (age 2), as well as Catherine’s widow mother Ann Moser (age 70). Samuel Moser (age 46) also lived in the household. This could have been either Catherine’s or George’s brother.

After William’s death, Catherine married Andrew Moser on June 14, 1897 at Salmon River, Halifax County, NS. Catherine was 48 at the time (c1849). This time, she listed Harrigan Cove, Halifax County, as her birth place.

Andrew was 58 years old, a widower and a carpenter. he was born (c1839) at Moser River, the son of Maria and George Moser.

According to their marriage record, William Jack Shiers wed Eliza Anna Moser on January 2, 1896 at Quoddy, 16-early-settlers-cemetery-sign-leaving-eHalifax County, NS. William was 29 years old. He was born at Moser River, the son of Phebe and Albert Moser. Eliza was 23 years old at the time of marriage. She was also born at Moser River, the daughter of Catherine and William Moser.

William died February 11, 1948 at Moosehead, Halifax County, NS, at the age of 81 years, 5 months, 23 days. His death record stated he was born August 20, 1866 at Halifax County, NS. His mother’s full name was recorded as Eliza Moser, who was born in Moosehead. His father Albert was also born 13-early-settlers-cemetery-ethere. William worked as a carpenter for 50 years.

Eliza died February 27, 1955 at Moosehead at the age of 82 years, 9 months, 22 days. She had lived in the hamlet for 60 years. According to her death record, she was born May 5, 1872 at Moser River. Her mother’s full name was Catherine MacDonald, who was born in Harrigan Cove, Halifax County, NS. Her father William was born in Moser River. Her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Moser of Moosehead, provided the information for the death record.

No birth records were found for Eliza or William.
