Gertie May: December 31, 1940, age 3 hours

Trueman Lester MacDonald was born at Harrigan Cove, the son of Charles Edward MacDonald and Lavinia Parker. He married Mary Ann Jordan McDonald on November 16, 1927 at St. James’ Rectory, Port Dufferin, NS. He was 32 years old, a bachelor and working as a labourer.

Mary Ann Jordan McDonald was born at Harrigan Cove, the daughter of Henry Ephriam MacDonald and Maggie Catherine Rumley. When she married Trueman, she was 21 years old.

On December 31, 1940, Mary Ann gave birth only seven months into her pregnancy. The baby—named Gertie May—lived for just three hours. Mary Ann was ill with tuberculosis of the lung, and the premature birth contributed to her death three months later. She was 33 years old.

Trueman was involved in a truck accident on September 2, 1950 and suffered a fractured skull. On January 22, 1951, he was admitted to the Halifax County Hospital, Cole Harbour, Halifax County, NS, for treatment. While there, he came down with pneumonia and died on February 23, 1951. He was 55 years old.

Together, Mary Ann and Trueman had the following children: Julia Isabelle (obituary), Hazel, Raymond and Sherman.
